James Hunter

VP, Finance and Investor Relations

James is Cherry’s VP of Finance and Investor Relations. In addition to leading these functions, he supports our follow-on investment decision making and provides our founders with strategic financial advice.

James brings significant experience from investment banking and enterprise software. He spent eight years in technology M&A and capital markets at Goldman Sachs and most recently led corporate finance for a high-growth SaaS company.

James graduated from the University of Oxford and lives in Lisbon, Portugal with his young family. After thirty (happy) years in the UK, he is enjoying the sunshine and learning how it feels not to be the native speaker.

What experiences have shaped you?

I graduated from university with a language and literature degree, but knew next to nothing about finance. And yet I came to realise that I had all the tools needed to teach myself on the fly. My long path to venture has instilled in me the value and power of curiosity and I try to remember that it's never too late to learn something new: a comfort in this ever-changing industry!

What inspires you?

It's deeply motivating and energising to play a part — however small — in supporting Europe's best founders as they take on some of the most interesting and difficult challenges around today. Time and again I'm inspired by people who can create something meaningful from nothing.

What’s it like to work at Cherry?

After a decade working with all types of people in three different roles, I think I've found the sweet spot at Cherry. Our team and community are closely knit, we work hard together and have ambition in spades, but we don't forget to enjoy the moment. Venture is a famously long-term game, but we savour the journey at Cherry.
