Christian Meermann
Founding Partner
Cherry Founding Partner and Forbes Midas Lister Christian learned the ins and outs of entrepreneurship early, helping out on the family farm (harvesting, among other things – you guessed it – cherries).
His entrepreneurial drive took him to four continents with studies in Germany, the US and Brazil, and companies such as Boston Consulting Group. This was all before he joined the founding team of Zalando as CMO, bringing the company from very small revenues to over 2 billion € revenues at IPO, spending 250M€ on marketing per year. In parallel, he built out and launched the brand in 15 European markets, which set the fundamentals for his big passion for brands.
To-the-point and always on the founder’s side, Christian truly epitomises Cherry’s “founders first” ethos. His cut-to-the-chase approach brings results, as proven by, among other success stories, one of Germany’s largest tech exits — flaschenpost’s $1 billion exit to Dr. Oetker.
Christian focuses both on B2B software and consumer, and loves founders with global ambitions and a fast growth mindset. Christian led our investments in Flix, Forto, tacto, Qualifyze, buycycle, and many more.
Outside of Cherry, Christian is a frequent guest lecturer at his alma mater WHU and CDTM Munich. Christian resides in Berlin, Germany with his family of five (and his beloved bike).
What lit the entrepreneurial spark in you?
Without a doubt, building Zalando. The energy. The drive. The momentum. Together, we built a great brand, a great company, and a great product that people love.
What traits do you look for in a founder?
While there are many positive founder traits to look for, I think resilience is key. Being a founder isn’t easy, especially at the early stages when a founder builds credibility around their idea or product. And with this will often come even more challenges. But the best founders bounce back and persevere, turning challenges into opportunities, and I’m proud to say that our portfolio is filled with founders embracing this focus, grit, and resilience.
